25 hours, Hot Tea, and Strep - the Friday poem roundup
What I wrote Wed, 4/2 to Fri, 4/4
Happy Friday, everyone. Three poems to share today as we head into a weekend of meh New Hampshire weather as part of a typical meh New Hampshire spring. As always, Every Day, Luv is here to perk up your meh spring.
4/2/25 Breathing and blinking Are pretty much The only two things I think I could do for 25 hours. I don’t know that I could speak truth to power, work an ER shift, fight a California wildfire, get into some good trouble. But I know that I can be there for wife, little one, and neighborhood, get them a drink, a nosh, a cool compress, make a little light, make a little trouble.
The wife and I had the privilege of meeting Cory Booker during his 2020 run for president. We saw him walking up the street towards our local bookshop and sprinted after him, inviting ourselves in to an intimate event where we learned what a mensch he is and became instant fans. His historical speech on the senate floor early this week only reaffirmed how fortunate we were to meet him and how fortunate we all are to have him in office.1
4/3/25 Does it matter Which mug I choose for you? Which porcelain snapshot Of our lives Greets you first thing? Your studio logo, Our nephew’s baby pics, Our favorite cafe, Or just a solid, sturdy, blank, blue mug? No matter which, There will always be A quivering, panting tea bag And a roiling, scalding kettle Waiting impatiently to get it on.
I make the wife tea every morning. This just popped in my head while waiting for the water to boil.
4/4/25 Strep has arrived. Little one brought it home Likely from some grubby classmate. Strep has arrived. Ok, you can sleep on the couch, But come morning, we want you out. Strep has arrived. Ok, you and the little one Can watch movies And stay up late gossiping about boys. But tonight, you’re on the first train to Georgia. Strep has arrived. Sorry, we weren’t kidding— You’ve got today only. Have your fun. Romp it up. Tomorrow, health moves back in.
The little one brought home strep. And we hope it leaves as soon as possible.
See y’all next week!
And he’s a vegan, which is a bonus!
